Set in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (265-420CE), Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese folk tale of the trials and tribulations of forbidden love. This month Malaysian performing arts group ‘The Dama Orchestra’ is presenting a musical version with modern twist of the tale at the Maj. Described as Romeo and Juliet meets Yentl, The Butterfly Lovers follows the tragic story of Shu (Zhu) Yingtai, whose determination to be educated like a man leads her to the love of her life, Liang Shanbo. Unfortunately, he’s not ‘husband she had to have’ …
The Dama Orchestra’s production combines period costumes with contemporary musical staging, a juxtaposition reflective of the common threads that mean that no matter what time period you come from, love hurts.
