dead prez’s signature combination of artistry and activism has earned them legendary status. Inspired by the Black Panther and Uhuru movements, dead prez match hard-hitting activism with even harder-hitting beats, focusing on social injustices, the prison system and indigenous rights.

With their breakout debut record, 2000’s Let’s Get Free, dead prez (aka Brooklyn rappers Stic.Man and M-1) led the charge in a renaissance of politically-conscious rap.

The album featured production from a young Kanye West, who famously said, “It wasn’t until I hung out with dead prez that I understood how to make raps with a message sound cool…”.

In 2002, dead prez contributed to Red Hot + Riot, a compilation album created by the Red Hot Organization in tribute to the music and work of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. The money raised by the CD was used for various charities devoted to raising AIDS awareness and fighting the disease.

They collaborated with fellow hip-hop artists Talib Kweli and Bilal and Brazilian singer Jorge Ben to remake the famous Fela Kuti song Shuffering and Shmiling for the album.

The band’s most recent album is 2012’s Information Age. Over the years, dead prez have built a fan base around their flamboyant live performances; known to ignite dollar bills and toss apples into the audience (a nod to their emphasis on living a healthy lifestyle).

Don’t miss what will be an electrifying live performance and rallying call-to-action from two of hip-hop’s most outspoken figures.
