Margaret Court has been nominated as one of the suggested additions to Australia’s National Living Treasures list by the National Trust.
Prompted by the death of artist Margaret Olley the National Trust is collaborating with Woman’s Day to run a vote for seven vacancies in the current list.
While the list is currently open for suggested additions, The National Trust has created a list of 100 suggestions for addition to the official list.
The National Trust of Australia (NSW) CEO Brian Scarsbrick, AM, is quoted as saying, ‘The title National Living Treasure is conferred when someone accomplishes an outstanding achievement, swelling the country’s consciousness with admiration, pride and acknowledgement.’
Other National Trust nominees for the award include Robyn Archer, Kylie Minogue and Cate Blanchett.
The National Living Treasures list was first published in 1997, and has been updated once before, in 2007. Current National Living Treasures include Michael Kirby AC, Graeme Murphy and Bob Brown.
The National Trust has been contacted for comment.
