New HIV vaccine starts human trials next year

A new vaccine to prevent HIV will begin human trials next year and could save ‘the lives of millions around the world’, according to a leading professor.

The new vaccine was developed in Canada at the University of Western Ontario by Dr. Chil-Yong Kang and his team and is one of only a few being developed in the world.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the human trials which will begin in January as the first of three phases.

‘FDA approval for human clinical trials is an extremely significant milestone for our vaccine, which has the potential to save the lives of millions of people around the world by preventing HIV infection,’ said Dr Kang, a researcher and professor at Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

The vaccine’s results so far have proven to stimulate strong immune responses in preliminary toxicology tests with no adverse effects or safety risks.
