The Court accidentally books comedian who makes jokes about trans people

The Court Hotel has cancelled an upcoming Fringe World appearance from Scottish comedian Leo Kearse after patrons highlighted his history of making jokes about transgender people.

Kearse is as award winning Scottish comedian whose show Right Wing Comedian was booked into The Court Hotel for the upcoming Fringe World Festival. He has previously been named Scottish Comedian of the Year and his show was a hit at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Court responded to patrons who commented on their Facebook page saying that they had been unaware of the content of the performance.

“We do apologise if we have offended anyone. We do our bookings as large groups through a comedy company and we clearly missed this topic!” The Court responded to each complaint on their social media pages.

Fringe World has also told people who expressed concern about the content of the show that it was outside their jurisdiction as it is a production from an independent producer playing at an independent venue.

The show has disappeared from Fringe World’s site, but it was described as a takedown of male feminists, snowflakes and the #metoo movement.

“He takes a scalpel to male feminists, environmentalists, snowflakes, #MeToo and much more. If you want to escape the liberal bubble of the Fringe and see a raw, hilariously antagonistic show from a man unafraid to speak his mind, this is the show for you.” the show’s description read.

The show previously played at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, a reviewer at website The Clothesline  gave the show a 4.5 star review.

Kearse told OUTinPerth the cancelation had taken him by surprise and noted that he had played many LGBTIQ venues in the past.

“I’m surprised that anyone perceived the material to be transphobic. Ironically I wrote it with a transgender woman I was dating because we were annoyed that big comedians (Chappelle, Gervais) were doing transphobic material and wanted to write more inclusive material. The material in the clip is about the ridiculous disparity in beauty standards society places on genders, and how difficult it would be for me to transition because of my physical characteristics.
“I’m a big believer in tolerance and diversity. I’m one of the very few openly right wing comedians on the circuit. My show is a tongue in cheek look at what it means to be right wing. Part of this is a criticism of traditional right wing homophobia and a celebration of progress (the right wing government in the UK passed the Same Sex Marriage Act).

“The clip that people are complaining about is from the free speech comedy night Comedy Unleashed which is co-run by Andrew Doyle, an LGBTQI+ comedian.

“I understand The Court provides a safe space to the LGBTQI+ community. I have performed in many LGBTQI+ venues over the years and never had a problem so I didn’t think twice about doing my show there. But the last thing I would want to do is make marginalised people feel like their space is compromised, so I completely understand The Court cancelling my run.” Kears said.
