Taiwanese courts had declared that not allowing same-sex couples to wed violated the country’s constitution and politicians had been given two years to amend the laws. However as opponents of same-sex marriage managed to raise a petition calling for a national vote on the issue, Taiwan’s citezen’s will now go to the polls to determine if the laws will be changed.

The petition calls for the marriage laws to be left as they currently stand to protect “family values” and calls for a new piece of legislation to recognise same-sex unions.
