Joel Creasey delivers intimate show at the Winter Dome

Joel Creasey | The Winter Dome | Until 20th July | ★ ★ ★ ★

Last night, at the unlikely, “pre-Fat-Cat’s betime” hour of 6.00pm, in an equally unlikely (yet beautiful) Winter Dome, my BF and I thoroughly enjoyed the frenetic, incessant and unashamedly queer comedy stylings of Perth’s own blonde bombshell, Joel Creasey.

I must confess, although in the past I’ve found Creasey’s particular brand of “My fabulous, Gay life on the B-list” comedy, a tad self-referential and repetitive. “I’m gay, I worked with Joan Rivers, I’m gay, I’ve been on telly, oh by the way, I’m gay.”

We were expecting to be served with more of the same, however Creasey’s ability to incorporate local relevance into his routines made for a fresh, irreverent and hilarious hour-and-a-bit of laughs. With hilarious barbs about the questionable quality of Telethon, Susannah Carr and chicken treat pig outs, Creasey spoke directly to the local audience.

By the end of his ceaseless, energetic set, the BF and I were laughing like drains and came to the same conclusion: He’s a barrel of laughs – but he’d be a lot of maintenance to date.

Catch Joel tonight at the Winter Dome and head to Visit Perth City to find out about all the events on in the Winter Arts Festival.
