Kim Jong-Hyun, the lead singer of Korean pop band SHINee, has died after being found unconscious in a Seoul apartment.
The twenty-seven year old singer was taken to hospital but could not be revived. Police arrived at the star’s apartment in southern Seoul after receiving a call from his sister, who had been concerned about his welfare.
The singer came to prominence in 2008 as the lead singer of the popular Korean boy band, who have been credited with bringing Korean pop music to an international audience.
Alongside his success in the band, where he was known as Jonghyun, he also enjoyed a successful solo career.
Back in 2013 the singer expressed support for Korean’s LGBTI community, a move that saw him receive criticism from religious and conservative groups. Homosexuality is legal in South Korea, but the LGBTI community faces substantial stigma and discrimination.
