Just four MPs ended up voting against marriage equality.
Russell Broadbent, David Littleproud, Keith Pitt and Bob Katter sat on one side of the House of Representatives while the vast majority of politicians crammed themselves onto the other side of the chamber.
With less than five MPs on the ‘No’ side, Speaker of the House Tony Smith declared that no count was needed and the aye’s had it.
Littleproud and Katter’s seats had voted No in the postal survey, but Broadbent’s Victorian seat had voted Yes, and so had Keith Pitt’s seat of Hinkler.
As soon as the decision was announced the public gallery burst into a long round of applause that went for several minutes, politicians hugged and the pubic burst into song, singing I Am Australian.Â
The marriage bill will now be sent to the Governor General for his ratification.
