New poll shows support for marriage equality is dropping

The latest Guardian Essential poll suggests that support for marriage equality is dropping.

The new poll shows support for same-sex marriage has dropped four per cent in the last fortnight. The latest poll shows support has fallen from 59% to 54% in just two weeks.

Support for the ‘No’ campaign has risen three per cent, showing that 34% of Australians are opposed to marriage equality.

Yes voters however are more likely to take part in the government’s national survey on the issue. Seventy nine per cent of YES supporters indicated they were likely to return the postal survey papers, while only 60% of those opposed to marriage equality said they were likely to fill out the forms.

The poll surveyed 1808 people, and shows a remarkably different outlook to the Fairfax-Ipsos poll released a week ago that showed support for marriage equality at 70%.

The dip in support comes as the YES campaign held a rally in Perth over the weekend that had a disappointingly low turnout.

The YES – Get Out the Vote rally organised by the Equality campaign attracted only a few hundred supporters. Similar rallies held in other Australian cities attracted crowds of up to 40,000.

This coming weekend Australian Marriage Equality and Get Up! are conducting ‘The Big YES door knock for Marriage Equality’.

Longstanding local marriage equality campaigners Equal Love WA are holding Yes! Fest, a rally for marriage equality on Saturday October 7th. While on the same day a rally will also be held in Albany.

The campaigns for and against marriage equality will continue for another two months until voting officially closes on November 7.

The result of the survey will be announced at 11.30am on November 15.
