State govt increase support for LGBTI+ mental health ahead of postal survey

Deputy Premier Roger Cook has today announced the McGowan Government will increase support for mental health services that support the LGBTI+ community ahead of the federal government’s postal survey on marriage equality.

The Minister for Health and Mental Health revealed in a press release that his department cannot ignore the effect of the postal survey on the LGBTI+ community who may be experiencing harm, discrimination or distress as the public debate continues.

“Even though I don’t support the survey, it doesn’t mean we can ignore it,” Cook said.

“The process has already created a situation we always wanted to avoid – where many in the LGBTI community are being forced to experience a hurtful and cruel campaign.”

The state government have provided the WA AIDS Council with $30,000 to deliver increased mental health awareness and support, while an additional $30,000 has been granted to Living Proud WA to undertake health promotion and training specifically for the LGBTI+ community.

The McGowan government will also allocate $250,000 in suicide prevention training grants for community organisations.

“We are sending an important signal over the coming months that it’s okay to seek help and there is extra support available,” the Minister for Mental Health said.

“The LGBTI community experience higher rates of mental health issues than the general population, and this is due in part to experiences of discrimination and exclusion.”

“The McGowan Government is committed to helping all Western Australians to have access to appropriate mental health support and services.”

This story is being updated as the WA Labor state conference continues. More to come.
