Margaret Court: Allowing gay marriage is against Australian values

Outspoken Western Australian religious leader Margaret Court has re-entered the marriage debate.

The former Tennis champion has sent a letter the The West Australian newspaper arguing that allowing same-sex couples to wed is against Australia’s values.

Reverend Court said it was disappointing that the government had decided to hold a vote on the issue of marriage.

The head of the Victory Life Mega-church said that since foundation immigrants had chosen to come to live in Australia because of the values the nation held.

“We have, ever since foundation, been a proud nation, a nation which people migrated to – to the extent that it eventually had to be restricted” Reverend Court said.

“Australia’s moral values are the envy of the world; nobody wants to leave and there are plenty in the queue wanting to get in. If we have to vote, let us vote no to gay marriage, for the sake of our children and our children’s children.”

Talk-back radio station 6PR discussed Reverend Court’s letter this morning with Breakfast host Steve Mills declaring “A Fair Go’ was the greatest Australian value. Mills said same-sex couples and their families should be treated the same as all Australians.

Reverend Court was widely criticised earlier this year for making negative comments about gay people and their children.

Comments the Wimbledon great made suggesting that transgender children were “the devil” lead to calls for her name to be removed from Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena.
