Transgender athlete Chris Mosier makes second U.S. team

Trans advocate and elite athlete Chris Mosier has qualified for the World Duathlon Championships after placing second Men’s Long Course Duathlon in North Carolina.

This win comes just a year after his battle with the International Olympic Committee to allow him to compete in the men’s category. Mosier’s triumph changed the rules to be inclusive to all future transgender Olympians.

This race held particular significance for the trans community, as North Carolina was the first of many to instate transphobic bathroom bills like HB2.

The best revenge is a life well lived. I raced the long course duathlon national championship today – in North Carolina – so after the race I took this photo, scars out, to celebrate being a transgender athlete and placing 2nd in my age group. My goal this year was to get on the podium at a National Championship race. The fact that it happened here is extra special. I also secured my spot on Team USA for 2018! 🙌 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Trans people are persistent, resilient, relentless people. I know this is true in North Carolina – there’s no other choice. I had a choice of whether to compete. This is a once a year chance to make Team USA, and I did not want to miss my opportunity because of the scare tactics and culture of fear politicians are cultivating in the state. I wanted to attend in protest, and do well. It was a tough, hot race, but it was tough and hot for everyone. I’ll happily take 2nd. Proud, happy, tired. 🇺🇸 #transathlete #teamusa #usatdulcn #duathlon #duathlete #purplepatchfitness #ffcchicago #trimonsters #empiretri #transandshirtless #ftm #transandproud #nationalchampionship #nobaddays #nobaddays #nobadhairdays @outmagazine @outsportsinspire @theadvocatemag @lavernecox @huffpostqueervoices @youcanplayteam @equalitync @dailyburn @strictlybicycles @nike

His success has paved the way for other transgender athletes like high school wrestler Mack Beggs, who made headlines after being forced to compete in the female category.
