just.equal: WA election result is a win for marriage equality

Marriage equality advocates say the WA election result has increased the momentum for marriage equality.

Mark McGowan and WA Labor’s win means that all Australian state and territory leaders now openly support marriage equality.

Long-time marriage equality advocate and just.equal spokesperson Rodney Croome says the WA election outcome boosts the momentum for marriage equality under the current Federal Government.

“The result shows that One Nation is much less of a threat to the Government than right wing Liberals warned, and that Labor can win big with a pro-marriage equality position,” Croome said.

“If Malcolm Turnbull wants to avoid the fate of the WA Liberals he must show leadership on marriage equality and allow the Liberals a free vote.”

Croome and just.equal continue to call on the Turnbull government to end their long-standing plebiscite policy and allow a free vote on marriage equality.

“A recent opinion poll showed 71% of Australians would look more favourably on the Federal Government if it dropped the failed plebiscite policy and moved marriage equality forward in Parliament instead,” Croome said.

“The WA election result shows what will happen if Mr Turnbull ignores these polls.”

The veteran LGBTIQ activist said there is no reason for the federal government to continue with their failed plebiscite policy when all state leaders openly support changes to the Marriage Act.

“With all state and territory leaders now in support of marriage equality, there are no longer any excuses for Federal Parliament delaying the reform.”
