Adelaide gets proud with new Rainbow Walk

ADELAIDEAdelaide has revealed a brand new rainbow walkway in the city’s centre celebrating the LGBTIQ+ community and its history.

The feature, dubbed the Rainbow Walk, is featured in Adelaide’s Light Square. The landmark also displays a timeline of LGBTIQ+ history in South Australia.

Former Greens Senator and Adelaide City Councillor Robert Simms told ABC the installation sends a positive message.

“We have a very proud story to tell here in South Australia – we were the first state in the country to decriminalise homosexuality,” Mr Simms said.

“The reason why I put this project forward when I was on council was so that we could recognise that tradition and really celebrate that proud history.”

Simms, along with LGBTIQ+ ally Dannii Minogue and Adelaide’s Lord Mayor Martin Haese, launched the Rainbow Walk this morning.

Lord Mayor Haese says the Rainbow Walk is a perfect addition to the city.

“It looks very fitting, it looks like it absolutely belongs in Light Square.”

The launch of the monument comes as part of Adelaide’s annual Feast Festival, celebrating LGBTIQ+ culture.
