New Years and New Queers

It’s exciting to be welcoming you to the activities and community interests of Cross Campus Queer Network in 2011. It is a very big year. We will be the focus of the nation’s attention as we play host the national queer youth conference Queer Collaborations (QC) in July which to be held at Curtin University. It also has a theme – Educate, Empower, Equip: Building a Queerious Community. We have taken that theme to heart already, with the introduction of a new website in 2011, which can be accessed at http://ccqn.net, a new Q-Zine in circulation around the campuses named QT and more meetings being held than ever before – most of which are to put together the monumental challenge of organizing a national conference. We are a hive of activity in 2011 and we’re welcoming new members!

The new elected NUS representatives in 2011 are Michael Pilkington from Murdoch University and myself, Adelaide Knowles, from Curtin University. We have already been very active establishing a Twitter and Facebook community to help facilitate discussion share and update our community as the ongoing organizational efforts of QC and the CCQN continue. We encourage you to follow our progress by following @CCQNWA to your Twitter lists, and watching the hash tags #qc2011, #ccqnwa and #queerperth.

We’ve just had our Orientation Days at all the major campuses and are pleased that the continued tradition of the Cross Campus Queer Network is reaching more and more students. We are hoping for record numbers this year with the introduction of the online sign up form, which is accessible to anyone who wants to receive our fortnightly newsletter, just visit http://ccqn.net/about/subscribe and enter your details. We will be focused heavily on organizing QC, but that won’t stop us from hosting a record number of events and complimentary fundraiser barbecues and movie nights – the CCQNWA program for 2011 is chockers.

Our focus this year is on community building, which includes increasing our contributions and connections to the local Queer community as we make more and more resources available to cover a broader spectrum of issues. This is also important come July when we play guide to hundreds of interstate visitors who will want to experience the Perth Queer scene at its best – So look interested Perth! We think it’s time to start telling other people about Perth, so if you’re going share a tweet, tag it with #queerperth so we can start advertising our city to the interstate peeps.
