Journey to the edge of science and art in 'Refuse The Hour'

South African artist William Kentridge is bringing his much anticipated multimedia theatre production ‘Refuse The Hour’ to the Perth International Arts Festival.

Kentridge describes the piece as a companion to his 2014 video installation ‘The Refusal of Time’, which appeared in Perth’s 2014 International Arts Festival. A journey to the edges of science and art, both playful and profound.

Kentridge himself takes to the stage, narrating a tale that begins with the myth of Perseus, travelling through time to view the works of Einstein.

Choreographer and dancer Dada Masilo interprets the narrative through dance, accompanied by singers and a live band that rattles life into the story.

PIAF Artistic Director Wendy Martin said that Kentridge is one of the great thinkers of the theatre world.

“This is a stunning piece of uncategorisable theatre about the nature of time which poses the question, ‘Imagine if you knew what your life was going to be at the beginning, would it be worth living?” Ms Martin said.

“Having Kentridge on stage delivering his lecture amongst a group of extraordinary performers and musicians and his own films and sculptures is a unique theatrical experience.”

‘Refuse The Hour’ will be at Perth Concert Hall from 12 – 14 February. For tickets or more information, head to Perthfestival.com.au.
