The Seven Sins of Barbie Q

Barbie Q

BarbieQ is a commanding presence. An indomitable force on stage, the queen is expanding her skillset and delving into the world of Circus. Along with fellow Connections mainstays Kinetica, known for showing off their acrobatic talents during the club’s Sideshow nights – Barbie is ready to titillate your senses with her salacious new Fringe show.

Is this your first Fringe show?

It is! Fringe has always been on my bucket list. Last year I thought, “I’m going to watch as much Fringe as I can” and then I can piece together in my mind a concept and get an idea that might be a little bit different. I didn’t want to propose a show and say “OK, I’m just going to put a drag show on” and that’s it. My boyfriend does circus and I’ve just started doing that kind of training and I thought I’d love to combine the two.

What can audiences expect from ‘Sinsuality’?

I wanted to do something a little risqué because there’s no point in doing something PC, because that’s just not me at all, so I thought I’d combine the seven deadly sins but try and make them sexy and combine it with sexual fetish. A lot of people would think of gluttony and think it’s just some disgusting person that’s going to eat food but I wanted to make it a lot more positive and sexy. The gluttony section is actually a beautiful burlesque girl, her name’s Sugar Du Joure and she’s just incredible. She’s designed this incredible costume and it’s a great twist on the theme and it’s just fabulous. We’ve also got Ruby from Bobbi’s Pole Studio doing wrath as a pole-dancing mistress. We’ve got a lot great acts because I wanted to choose the best people that I could.

As the ring-mistress, did you choreograph the entire show?

Each act has their own thing. I pieced the show together but we’ve all worked together as a unit to discuss music. The sound is like a rollercoaster because we don’t want all the music to be the same. I chose each sin, allocated it. I’m producing with Bec and Sarah from Kinetica and my partner Sam has been consulting. We come up with the sin, we come up with the colour scheme, we work together to choose music and each act has been working on their own skill. It’s a group effort!

Are there any other Fringe shows you are dying to see?

Obviously I love Kinetica and they’re doing their own independent show called ‘Dark Matter’. I love Briefs! Every year I love Briefs. I just bought my tickets – I know I get an artist’s pass but I love to pay for things because I know it can be a difficult time and there’s so much to go and see. The other thing is Le Gateau Chocolat, I just love him, I think he’s a pistol – and of course our local acts, DJ Feminem (Mad As Hell) and Ginava (C.D. & Machè). There’s just so much to look at!

Watch Ringmistress BarbieQ and her troupe sin to win in Sinsuality at The Lunar Sensation from Monday 15th – Sunday 21st February. Tickets available from Fringeworld.com.au.
