Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu and Professor Marceline van Furth were married in The Netherlands on Wednesday.

Tutu is currently the executive director of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, while Furth is a professor in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Vrije University in Amsterdam, and holds the Desmond Tutu Chair in Medicine at the university. Professor van Furth also heads a project in South Africa that aims to improve the treatment of tuberculous meningitis in children.

It is the second marriage for both. While the wedding was  small private affair, the couple will celebrate their wedding with friends and family in Cape Town later in the year.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a vocal opponent of apartheid and a proponent of non-violent demonstration. He was the winner of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize.  He was the first black Archbishop of Cape Town and is a long term supporter of LGBTI rights. Tutu married his wife Nomalizo Leah Shenxane in 1955, last year the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Tutu, now 84 years old, retired in 1996 and serves as bishop-emeritus to his former church diocese.  Mpho is his fourth child.

Mpho Tutu is an ordained Episcopal priest and was previously  the chairman of the Global AIDS Alliance. Mpho Tutu was previously married to Joseph Burris, the couple have two children.

  1. Still waiting for Australia to recognise same sex marriages. Hopefully we’ll catch up soon. Congratulations to them both and I hope they have many great years ahead.

  2. There is nowhere … where gay couples actually had a child biologically together…

We didn’t get to 7 Billion in total through homosexual relationships…

God’s order is that a man and a woman marry each other.

You don’t need to be a genius to figure this out.

If being gay is so cool then make your kids marry same sex partners.

There are certain things that some of the ignorant comment on because they are watching from the outside in.

If you had 4 kids and all of them had gay partners you would never have any grandkids.

So wise up and honour God and stop the fish talk about being happy for them.

They stand condemned before God all and I can show you God’s mind in scriptures.

Try reading 1st Corinthians 6:9-11 where gay folsom don’t make it to heaven.

  5. It’s sad you’ll have overlooked the big picture and are basing all thoughts on Race. This is not about Race. It’s about what caused the whole Sodom and Gomorrah being destroyed by God. Sad very Sad.

  9. Wow, if some of the “righteous” people in these comments actually do make it to heaven, I’d much rather spend an eternity in hell than share their company. I’m from Perth, so I’d probably be much more comfortable in that heat anyway…

  11. I’m pretty old and a Christian….my mum taught me if you have nothing nice, kind or loving to say…say nothing….many blessings Mpho Tutu and Marceline van Furth, MY telepjhone to Glory tells me you are loved…..after all Jesus said he brought a new commandment, in legal speak thats a new legislation which overrides previous rulings, for all of us to love one another as he loves us, okay….now get on with the congratulations and give up on the nastiness.

  12. To the people on here who feel it’s their duty to make wrong this couples marriage. The bible also says to take a slave is ok. We as a society have moved on since that was written. We now say that slavery is not ok. Society and law says what is ok. Black people in USA were second class citizens and weren’t “allowed” to drink from the same water fountain as white people nor sit at the front of a bus. We saw how black people were treated in South Africa and eventually turned this around to be more equal. All around the world there are examples of people suffering and being dominated by others. Eventually we say this is unlawful. Black and white people marrying used to be an abomination. Black people in Australia were seen as and treated like animals this is now being corrected. Two consenting adults marrying regardless of their gender is up to them and it is us the society to adjust to allow the laws to reflect this. This has nothing to do with religion. This is a legal matter.

  13. This is such a lovely story! Thanks for publishing. Reminds me that there is a whole world of loving and recognised couples out there, out of Australia, that is. I never realised, when I decided to become an Australian citizen, that Australian Government would slink backwards on human rights over the past 30 years. The continuing denial of Equal Marriage rights, the scandalous treatment of refugees and the on-going struggles (don’t get me started!) of Australia’s First Nations Peoples are human rights failures.
