Perth International Arts Festival have just announced their 2016 program inspired by visionaries, mavericks and dreamers.
The 64th PIAF program delivers a multi-arts experience that celebrates artists from across the globe and provides WA audiences with an opportunity to engage with some of the world’s most creative minds.
‘The Wild Duck’ makes its WA theatrical premiere under the direction of the highly acclaimed Simon Stone as he re-imagines the Henrik Ibsen classic, while Kamikaze cabaret diva Meow Meow presents her subverted, glittering version of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’.
From the world of dance, Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui explores religious and philosophical texts through the language of the body in ‘Apocrifu’. Indian choreographer Aditi Mangaldas brings the traditional and complex Kathak technique to Australia with a performance of ‘Within’. The West Australian Ballet is also reigniting ‘Ballet at the Quarry’ for another stunning Summer season, performing five works underneath the stars.
The Classical Music program brings the very first performance of ‘Swing Symphony’ with iconic jazz artist Wynton Marsalis, as well as the musicians and 17th century instruments of Concerto Italiano and a three day Chamber Music Weekend.
From the contemporary music scene, indie darling Jose Gonzalez, Icelandic composer Johann Johannson, London rapper Little Simz and Washington punk legends and queer icons Sleater-Kinney (pictured) will be stopping by for some earth-shattering shows.
Guests for the Perth Writers Festival portion will include ethologist Richard Dawkins, contemporary philosopher Roman Krznaric and Booker Prize nominee Patrick deWitt.
There will also be activities for the kids, the Lotterywest Film Festival, visual art installations and much, much more.
