Eddie Dos Santos is a stylist who is at the top of his game. He styles for the likes of Kooey Swimwear and Alister Yiap’s Malachi, plus recently did the lookbook for Lonely 8-Bit Heroes.
It’s a far world from breakfast radio. On a whim he followed a friend’s advice and met with the fashion editor of a local publication, who liked his personal style so much he got the job.
‘A stylist’s role is basically to be a visionary and interpret an idea with clothing,’ Dos Santos told OUTinPerth.
‘It’s an integral role as without the direction and clothing choices it can make or break a photo shoot!’
Highlight thus far has been styling the Kooey Swimwear show at Miami Swim Fashion Week earlier this year.
‘It was an honour to be involved on such a high profile show with them as you really do have all eyes of the international media on your talents and it’s a place where the who’s who of swimwear show their collections.’
The two most invaluable things he has learnt on the job include patience and taking risks.
‘People don’t realise the time that it takes to produce an image – with makeup and hair and lighting changes it can be hours before you commence shooting and end with an image that everyone involved is happy with.
‘And then I’m always encouraging my friends (and) clients to break away from the pack and be original…..You know, mix high end with high street and op-shop pieces no one should look like a walking billboard for a designer!’
Dos Santos’ advice to people is to network. Not just with the big names, but also those who are emerging. After all, the greatest sense of community comes from helping those around you, nurturing them as you nurture yourself.
‘My advice would be to get out there and meet other up and coming creatives. There’s always others out there wanting a start in the industry whether that be in styling, photography or makeup.
‘Hang in there and be prepared to work a lot for nothing but save some images for your portfolio. As i have said to many “if your passionate and enjoy what your doing you will succeed”.’
