Keira Daley’s Slap Dash Song Night is a riot.
The Fringe World show, which began life in a Sydney record shop, is part sing-a-long, part talk show and all with a healthy dash of comedy and nostalgia thrown in.
The show is recorded live and is later released as a podcast that’s available in iTunes. Every night is guaranteed to be 80% different from the previous show, meaning this a show you can easily go along to more than once.
Daley hosts the show, while side-kick Mark Chamberlain plays the keyboards and provides backing vocals. The show is full of fun segments like ‘Cover Me Bro’ which delivers songs that are so incredibly awful that they have never been covered before, and a section that focussed on Saley’s original material – a shamelessly embarrassing song that she wrote when she was a 15 year old Alanis Morrisette devotee.
Backed by their motto of ‘Singy Sing, Talky Talk, Drinky Drink’, this is a show that had mountains of audience interaction as everyone joined in for an hour of mayhem and reminiscing.
Last night’s show had a focus on the ’90s and one of the highlights was Ofa Fotu, best known as her alter-ego Odette Mercy, delivering a hilarious rendition of Coolio’s ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’.
“You’re all my Michelle Pfeiffers” Fotu shouted out before delivering a spot impersonation of Collio’s raised eye brows from the iconic video. Fotu doesn’t do things by halves, she brought along a 15 strong backing choir to pull off the number. An mpressive feat to pull off within the tight confines of the Casa Mondo venue.
Tyler Jacob Jones, who set to appear in the upcoming show ‘Fuck Decalf’ was the evenings other guest. Jones came magnificently dressed a the agel Pygar from Jane Fonda’s 1968 film ‘Barbarella’. He explained that he’d been to a fancy dress party before the show, but we’d like to think that’s just how he rolls.
Jones offered as his nugget from the Nineties a rendition of Desiree’s ‘Life’. A song that has truly the worst lyrics to ever grace a hit tune. Jones clever deconstructed Desiree’s pondering about being afraid of ghosts and eating toast.
Daley and her guests closed off the night with a perfect ending a mish-mash rendition of all the nest TV show themes from the 1990’s. It was a ending that had the entire room on their feet, which is quite impressive in a tiny circus tent.
