Grey is best known for his role as the Master of Ceremonies in the Broadway and film productions of ‘Cabaret’.

The actor won the Best Actor Oscar, Golden Globe and Tony Awards for his portrayal of the role.

Grey also played Amos in ‘Chicago’ on Broadway and was the original Wizard in ‘Wicked’.

Grey said his 24 year old marriage to actress Jo Wilder was one of the happiest periods of his life. The couple divorced in 1982 and had two children.

Grey’s announcement has been welcomed by his daughter actress Jennifer Grey, who found fame in the film ‘Dirty Dancing’.

“I feel very happy for my dad that he has come to a point in his life where he feels safe and comfortable enough to declare himself in a public way as a gay man,” Jennifer Grey told ‘People’ magazine.

“Mostly because the more people are free to own their true nature and can hopefully come closer to love and accept themselves as they really are, no matter what age, no matter how long it takes, to finally be free of the lies or half truths, it is freedom.”
