Pam Ann: On A Wing & A Prayer

The sky has never been a safe place. So many things fall from it. And if it isn’t things falling, it gets clogged up: with rain clouds, hurricanes, aeroplanes, space junk. Volcanic ash. Kites.

Adding to the drama of the sky is Pam Ann, the larger than life comedic alter ego of Caroline Reid. As an outspoken, outrageous air hostess straight out of the ’60s, Pam Ann’s vivaciousness is as big as her hair or Pucci riding hat and that’s typically big.

In fact, she’s so big her own cult following quickly catapulted her into international celebrity with trolley dollies the world over mimicking her panache for bouffant up-do’s and cravats. It seems they even share her love of smut, especially if they work at Virgin Blue.

But for Reid, Pam Ann isn’t just a way to poke fun at international airline industries; it’s a way to see the world: Pam Ann Airways has just done a return flight tour across America with a slight stop-over in London.

‘The Americans are very vocal compared to the British!’ Reid told OUTinPerth of her recent USA sojourn.

‘It was exciting touring the States because I had never performed in places like Miami and Dallas before, and in Dallas they had signs up saying no guns allowed in the theatre!

‘It was as they say: AWESOME!’

So did Aussie ex-pat Reid and Pam get caught up in the Eyjafjallajokull debacle?

‘No, thank god, because I live in NYC and was working in LA and San Francisco at the time. But it has given me a whole new script!

‘I just performed in Zurich so there were loads of references to the ash cloud. Never a dull moment in travel!’

Travel itself stands at the edge of a new frontier as Virgin Galactic gears up for suborbital spaceflights, a potential revolution in just how far and fast humans will be capable of voyaging across the sky.

‘I actually wrote to Virgin Galactic to book my seat,’ Reid confessed.

‘They responded very quickly as well. They have 400 people booked already at the cost of $200,000 they told me to be quick to book as it booking up!

‘They also told me that they have to do a couple more test flights before they take the general public up, I think Pam Ann will be on those! I see Pam Ann Galactic coming soon!

‘I mean really the Virgin crew can barely make it back from Orlando let alone fucking space!’

PAM ANN’S OPINION ON:

What’s the new show about?
Volcanic ash clouds and every Aussie Airline there is to roast!

How has the war on terror impeded on your industry?
It’s just made it more exciting don’t you think! Nothing more exciting than someone coming up behind you with something hard!

Pucci vs Gucci who would win?
Pucci – I love a multi coloured print!

What do you say to the Virgin staff who were recently laid off for forwarding pornography during work hours (and their claims that it was condoned in the workplace)?
Come work with Pam Ann Airlines- we encourage that behaviour! Virgin ‘Blue’ (it’s in the name for fuck’s sake) are hypocrites because they sell their airline by promoting sex! Sex sells after all! I love a bit of double penetration myself!

Pam Ann flies in to The Astor Theatre in Perth on Tuesday August 17, with gates open from 8pm. For all booking inquires please visit www.bocsticketing.com.au and keep your trays in the upright position.
