Doing The Rounds
Bennett Miller is a man obsessed with dogs. Obsessed! The guy went all the way to Melbourne to create a scale replica of the United Nations… pup-ulated with Daschunds (trust me, I saw it). Now he’s appearing at PICA as part of Rounds, his entire room installation paying homage to a very special guest star on the weekend… Rolly the dog. Obsessed I tell you! Mind you, a mild sense of obsession seems to play at the heart of Rounds as an exhibition, with record players, interactive swinging structures, foosball and cabinets filled with drawings on display. All up, Neil Aldum, Rebecca Baumann, Tim Carter, Elise/Jürgen, Sgannon Lyons, Bennett Miller, Sarah Rowbottam and George Egerton-Warburton will be on show. Runs until August 25. www.pica.org.au

Mistaken Identities
Shakespeare loved a bit of the old gender bend. So much so it was from his productions that the term ‘drag’ or ‘dressed as girl’ originated from. His comedic treat Twelfth Night will not disappoint as twins Viola and Sebastian find themselves shipwrecked. What ensues sees Viola dress up as a boy and meet a countess, who then falls in love with the ‘boy’, setting in motion a string of events. Could you imagine this role back in the day? It would’ve been a man dressed as a girl dressed as a man. Now though it’s played by a real girl, this time around Amanda Woodhams and a cast of many from Black Swan State Theatre Company. Opens July 24 until August 8 at Playhouse Theatre. www.bsstc.com.au

Spirit Fingers
When I went to the media call for Spirit Fingers, I sat there thinking ‘Oh gee, magic’ – such was my enthusiasm (I’m a very enthusiastic person, honest). But then I sat opposite one star of Spirit Fingers, Matt Penny, and I think he could smell my cynicism, so he pulled out the most amazing card trick possible, the kind where you jaw literally drops and you beg immediately, ‘How..?!! Wha…?! Huh…?! Tell me how you did that!?’ Naturally a magician never gives away their secrets. Spirit Fingers promises to be like this times 250, it’s that awesome. Penny will be joined by Christopher Kenworthy for a night of magic and mystery with plenty of dancing, detached hands. Get ready to get stunned. Opens July 6 until July 24 at The Blue Room. www.blueroom.org.au
