GRAI

Noeline Brown, Ambassador for Ageing, will be in Perth on Monday 12 July 2010 to launch the report ‘We don’t have any of those people here’. Retirement accommodation and aged care issues for non-heterosexual populations and the Best practice guidelines – accommodating older GLBTI people.

Research indicates older GLBTI people are likely to be disadvantaged in the aged care sector due to their sexuality. Recent research carried out by GRAI (GLBTI Retirement Association Inc) in conjunction with Curtin University and supported by a Lotterywest Social Research Grant, investigated the preparedness of the retirement and residential aged care sector in Western Australia in response to this minority group.

Findings suggest that older GLBTI people remain relatively invisible within the retirement and residential aged care sector in WA. The majority of respondents had little experience with, and were unaware of older GLBTI people in their facilities.

As a result, a set of best practice guidelines – accommodating older GLBTI people have been developed for the retirement and residential aged care sector in WA, to facilitate the provision of GLBTI-inclusive services.

Launch details: Monday 12 July 2010, Kingia Care Centre, 5 Allen Court, Bentley, 5.30-7.00pm. RSVP to Rita Freijah ritamon@iinet.net.au
