Isolation Breeds Innovation

While the fashion world in Perth may be a small one, according to Jo Pickup, fashion designer and artist, its size is one of its greatest assets. ‘Our isolation breeds innovation’, Pickup told OUTinPerth, adding that this freedom from outside influence has contributed to the evolution of a fresh, clean and original look in WA fashion. Over the next couple of months Jo is hosting a series of talks at the Fremantle Arts Centre exploring WA fashion and the boundary between fashion and art as it exists in some of WA’s most successful labels.

The series began on Wednesday, April 4th with a talk focussing on label ericaamerica. The next talk will be with FORMALLYKNOWNAS and Elizabeth Delfs on Wednesday, April 11th, followed by Su on April 18th and Megan Salmon on May 9th. Talks will cover the start of the designer’s respective careers, their current inspirations and their future aspirations. The series will include audiovisual examples of designer’s works with a chance for audience questions at the end of each talk. Held in the central courtyard of the Fremantle Arts Centre, the doors will be open at 6pm; with the talks starting at 7pm. Tickets are $10 for each event and are available from the Fremantle Arts Centre. For more information, check out www.fac.org.au.
