Referrals to Australia’s only clinic for transgender people under the age of 18 has soared in recent years.
The ABC TV program ‘7:30’ has reported that Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital has seen a significant growth in demand for treatment of gender dysphoria in recent years. In 2013 the unit accepted as many patients as in the previous decade and further growth is expected in 2014.
The growth is demand for the service has been attributed to increased community understanding of the needs of transgender youth. To help support the growth the Victorian government has delivered funding to a new youth initiative to provide greater peer support. The ‘Where is My Ally?’ project is being developed by Transgender Victoria and trans youth organisation Ygender.
