Nina Las Vegas Gives Good Advice

nina-After six years at the helm of Triple J’s Saturday night house party DJ Nina Las Vegas is moving into new territory focusing more on club sounds and new challenges. This month she’s coming to town on the Circo Festival line-up.

The popular DJ had a quick chat with OUTinPerth about which festival acts she’s dying to see, her recent decision to give up he hosting chair on ‘House Party’ and her advice on a good work ethos.

You recently shared the advice “Work hard and don’t be a fuckwit” in your Twitter account, when did you first you get that advice?

That’s my advice, it’s so true. You’ve got to be nice to people and you’ve got to work hard!

You’ve just stepped down from hosting Triple J’s House Party. Was that a big decision to make?

It was a massive decision, I’d been thinking about for it for the last six months. Basically it’s not so much stepping down, as I wanted to ‘step up’ into being on MixUp exclusively. I just really wanted to push the club sound a little more, we’ve got this awesome thing happening in Australia right now and I want to be a part of it. I want to be able to play more, and want to be able to get involved a bit more, which is just really hard when you’ve got a full time job. So I had to cut something that I’ve done for six years out of my weekly schedule.

I think six years is a good time; two CD’s two sold out tours.

You grew up in country NSW, how important was Triple J to you when you were younger?

When I was studying for my HSC, Triple J was like my timetable.  I would work to ‘Mel in the Mornings’ and then at lunchtime I’d have a break when Myf took over, it was really important to me.

The Circo Festival is coming up, do you like being a part of a tour with lots of different artists?

Of course, it’s a lot of fun and there’s heaps of my friends playing on it too. I’m very excited. I can’t wait to see DJ Q play and I haven;t seen Onra play for ages. I feel like he only ever goes to Perth! It’s going to be cool to catch up with Ryan Hemsworth because he’s a good friend of mine… I really like those dudes Odesza, I smash one of their tracks quite a lot, so I want to see what they do like.  I also really want to see Violent Solo play!

Nina Las Vegas is one of the acts appearing at the Circo Festival on June 28th.
