Kathleen Wynne Returned as Premier of Ontario

Kathleen WynneOntario, the largest state in Canada has become the first state in Canada to elect an openly gay person to be the head of it’s government.

Kathleen Wynne, 61, became the 26th Premier of Ontario last year when she succeed Premier Dalton McGuinty who stood down after ten years in the leadership role.

On Thursday Wynne’s Liberal party was reelected with an increased majority, a result which surprised many political analysts. The election has been a three way battle between left wing Liberals, a right wing conservite party and another more left wing party.

The result also makes Wynne the first openly gay person to be elected by the people to the role of leader of a state in N0rthern America.

In her victory speech Wynne commented, “That thing I said in my leadership [campaign] about how Ontarians do not hold prejudice in their heart, that Ontarians want to be an open and inclusive people — we have so proven that tonight.”

Ontario is Canada’s largest state encompassing the city of Toronto and the nation’s capital Ottowa. Forty percent of Canadian’s live in the Ontario, which one of ten state’s that form the country.
