In early March, France’s highest appeals court ruled against a gay couple who married in France in June 2004 and are seeking official recognition of the union. Stephane Chapin and partner Bertrand Charpentier are the only gay couple to have attempted a marriage in France, so far all rulings have found that marriage under French law is restricted to heterosexuals.
