Reclaim the Night

DSC_0007The international protest ‘Reclaim the Night’ returns to Perth this Friday night. The event was not held in Perth last year but now a new organising committee has put it backĀ  into action. Spokesperson Anastasia Ward told OUTinPerth about what they have planned for Friday night.

“We’re very excited this year, we’ve got a new committee and it’s a been a few years since there was a ‘Reclaim the Night’ in Perth. There’s a been a Fremantle version and that’s great, but it’s good to have a Perth version happening again,” Ward said.

‘We’ve book the Cultural Centre Amphitheatre and from about 6pm in the evening we’ll be having guest speakers. Notably Lynn MacLaren will be speaking and she’s a wonderful womanĀ  and great representative for women and the lesbian community.”

Alongside MacLaren and other speakers there will also be live music and events in the cultural centre before the march through the streets of Northbridge.

“We’re aiming to have as diverse and embracing a crowd as possible, both men and women are invited are to the presentation in the cultural centre. The march itself is for women though,” explained Ward.

Ward also clarified the organisations stance on trans* women participating in the event, given some previous events of a similar nature have not been welcoming of the trans* community.

“Trans women are women,” Ward said,Ā  “If you consider yourself a woman, then you are as far as I’m concerned.”

Reclaim the Night is on this Friday, find out more at their Facebook page, the Fremantle event will be in Kings Square Fremantle from 6:30pm, more details here.
