Local News Briefs – February

SUNDOWNER GOES UNIVERSAL
The Pride Women’s Sundowner has found a new permanent home. After the closure of Vulture’s restaurant in December last year the monthly event has been held at various venues. Organisers say they are thrilled about the move to Universal Bar on William Street in Northbridge, next door to Grapeskin Bar, where the event first started. An upstairs private bar area with access to a balcony will be set aside for the sundowner, to be held on Wednesday March 10 from 6.30pm.

Pride WA will be holding their AGM at Loton Park Tennis Club on Monday, March 22, with proceedings start at 7pm. The meeting is open to all current members of Pride and the organisation is calling for people interested in joining the Pride Committee to come forward at the AGM. TRANS CASE BACK BEFORE COURTS
The Court of Appeal is hearing the landmark case of two trans men who had their preferred gender officially recognised by the State Administration Tribunal, overturning an earlier ruling of the Gender Reassignment Board. Despite undergoing surgical procedures and hormone therapy treatment, the two men were originally denied official recognition of their male gender identity by the board due to the fact that both had remaining female reproductive organs. The SAT concluded however that the men fulfilled the requirements required to be officially recognised as male, allowing them to acquire identity documents in their lived-in gender. The victory was short lived as within days Attorney-General, Christian Porter had launched an appeal. Outside court one of the trans men commented that it would be disappointing if the Court of Appeal overturned the SAT ruling but hoped it would clarify the law in WA.

THANKS MARY KAYE
After a short but eventful stint at the helm of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s Abby of the Black Swan, Mother Mary Kaye Lipstick has resigned her position due to work and study commitments. Mother Mary Kaye Lipstick will continue to play a role within the organisation and a new mother will be announced shortly. The Abbey wishes Mother Mary Kay well in his new job and studies and thanks him for his time as Mother.
