Soul singing sensation Jill Scott is making her way to Australia for the first time and will be appearing at the Riverside Theatre in November.
The Pennsylvanian native began her career as a spoken word artist before being discovered by Questlove from The Roots. Soon Scott was collaborating with Will Smith, Common and Eric Benet. She also spent some time on stage performing in the musical ‘Rent’.
In 2000 Scott released her debut album, the inquisitively titled ‘Who Is Jill Scott?’ The album was a critical success and received a Grammy nomination for best R&B album. Since then Scott’s gone on to record a second and third volume in the series. Her recordings are a mix of suave vocals, classic soul sounds and modern hip hop flavours.
Earlier in her career Scott established herself as a live performer to take note of, her 2001 double album ‘Experience Jill Scott 826+’ has been hailed as one of the best live albums of recent years.
Later this year Scott is set to release her latest work, a collection of lullabies and another new album is planned for early in the New Year.
During her break from recording over the last few years Scott has taken time out to begin a family and indulge her interest in acting. She scored a lead role in the BBC/HBO TV series The Number 1 Women’s Detective Agency and appeared in an all African-American remake of the film ‘Steel Magnolias’ alongside Alfre Woodard, Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rash.
