Cyndi Lauper – Still So Unusual

Cyndi LauperWithin the first few minutes of Cyndi Lauper’s new reality TV show ‘Still So Unusual’ it’s clear that Cyndi is not a diva.

The show opens with her in the kitchen washing the dishes. The dishwashers broken and neither Cyndi’s husband David or teenage son Declan has been up to the task. Following in the footsteps of Ozzy Osborne, Gene Simmons , Flavour Flav, Jessica Simpson and one of the Jonas Brothers, Cyndi has opened her crazy life up to the cameras for a reality TV show. There’s nothing groundbreaking in the style of this show – it’s your basic celebrity reality show.

Yet an insight into Lauper’s life is a whole bunch of fun, the first episode sees Cyndi and her team heading over to Los Angeles for an appearance on the American version of ‘The Voice’. In the second episode Cyndi is a special guest at the Kentucky Derby, she has to marshal a parade, appear at some events and find a really enormous hat to wear. The third episode sees Cyndi heading off to the Cannes Film Festival.

This is an interesting look into the practicalities of being a celebrity. When Cyndi accidentally drops the F bomb in front of children at the parade when she doesn’t realise the microphone she’s holding is live. Within minutes the incident is on YouTube.

Another revealing point is during a walk along the beach at Cannes, she stops for a moment to take a photo with a fan. Within minutes hundreds of people have surrounded her, and the chance to have a romantic walk along the beach has vanished. There are 12 episodes in the series.

Cyndi Lauper’s ‘She Still So Unusual’ airs on Foxtel’s Bio at 5:30pm from 4 August.

Cyndi is touring Australia Melbourne Aug 29-30, Canberra Aug 31, Hobart Sept 2, Adelaide Sept 4, Sydney Sept 6-7, Gold Coast Sept 10, Brisbane Sept 11, Wollongong Sept 14.
