Summer Storm (M)

Directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner

Bavarian filmmaker Marco Kreuzpaintner, who is the youngest member of Germany’s Regional Parliament, used his own coming out experiences as the basis for this emotionally mature and sensitive film. High school students Tobi (Robert Stradlober) and Achim (Kostja Ullmann) have been best friends for years and are looking forward to the big regatta that is part of the annual rowing summer camp. Ripples of unease begin when Tobi realises that he would like their friendship to be a bit more and his hopes are raised when the two masturbate side by side in the locker room one afternoon. But when Achim starts spending time with one of the members of the female rowing team also at the camp, Toby feels pushed aside.

When Queerstrokes (great name for a rowing team), a team of young gay guys, replaces the much anticipated Berlin girls’ team, Tobi and his team mates are forced to confront their prejudices, fears and even hidden desires. Toby hides his sexual confusion and internalised homophobia by clowning around. As the heat rises (actually and metaphorically) and the summer storm gathers strength, all the teams have to shelter for the night in an abandoned youth hostel. Achim doesn’t get the guy he wants, but he learns a lot at summer camp. When the rowing race eventually gets underway there are more unexpected surprises but The Pet Shop Boys’ song ‘Go West’ gives the film a feel-good ending.

Summer Storm has been a very popular at queer film festivals and screens as part of the Audi Festival of German Films at Cinema Paradiso 16-20 April. Unfortunately you might have to have a public health day as Summer Storm actually screens at 11am on Friday 17 April. Check out www.lunapalace.com.au for more details and ticket purchases.
