Freedom Centre and Gay & Lesbian Community Services in 2009

We’re starting to get into to the full swing of things for the year at FC and GLCS, so we thought it would be useful to give you all a heads up for what you can expect from us in 2009.

This year is an important year for both GLCS and FC as it is the 35th anniversary since GLCS started and the 15th anniversary since FC started! So stay tuned for retrospectives and info about celebrations this year.

Freedom Centre is calling for stories and info from past and present FC visitors, volunteers and staff about the centre’s 15 year history. This will be used for the 15 year celebration, so send your stories and contributions to info@freedom.org.au

FC has a few other things in store for 2009:

  • Working with Curtin’s WA Centre for Health Promotion Research on the My-Peer project. This will help us to refine and further develop our evaluation, volunteer training and reporting procedures and thereby make our services more effective, efficient and sustainable.
  • Consulting with and training LGBT-friendly organizations to ensure that they really are knowledgeable about working with Trans* and sex & gender diverse people.
  • Making the FC Sleepover Retreat a regular quarterly event for FC visitors.
  • Continuing to improve on FC online services and the website www.freedom.org.au by adding a range of new info pages and continuing to develop our forum.
  • Releasing bi-annual editions of the FC Zine ‘Ama-gi’.

GLCS also has a number of things coming in 2009;

  • Monthly fundraising events at the Court
  • WOW (Women on Women) course starts March 4th so register now!
  • An online forum for same sex attracted women to be launched later this year
  • Police Diversity training and consultations will continue on a regular basis and some developments regarding making some of their policies and procedures more LGBT friendly are in the pipeline!!
  • GLCS is continuing to promote the Opening Closets training in WA Workplaces. You can help us achieve this by asking your work place to reduce homophobia in the workplace by having GLCS do the Opening Closets training where you work.

So stay tuned to www.freedom.org.au , www.glcs.org.au and our columns in the community pages of OUTinPerth!!!
