XMas Gift Guide – Budgie Smugglers

Grundies, undies, briefs, boxers, thongs, jockstraps… what ever you like to call the humble underpant, one thing remains the same: underwear is the fundamental building block of any outfit. Without a comfortable pair of underpants, even the most stylish or sophisticated outfit crumbles as your crown jewels clinch a little too close… to each other and yourself. A good set of jocks – the kind that are fashionable on the outside and ’embracing’ on the inside (that’s somewhere between support and a loving hug) – will make you feel like a million bucks… and more often than not, look like it too.

But where to start? With the recent explosion of luxury brands going mainstream, the humble jocks have managed to pull themselves out of the scrum and get themselves noticed. As either as the cornerstone look of a fashion corporation (think Calvin Klein) or a fledgling burgeoning big business maker in their own right (Aussie Bum, 2xist and Teamm8), jocks are now brands that deal in big bucks. And with just cause too… sometimes it’s not just the bucks that are big.

So here’s a blow by blow account of what’s hot down there, and how….

TEAMM8

These guys are bringing sexy back. Their campaigns are sexy and chic, desirable and downright suggestive. The underpants themselves achieve the same in an incredibly well structured vein. These true blue Aussie undies combine a strong classic shape with a cute and cutting edge marketing campaign, one which encourages you to participate. Yes, they encourage you to take pics of yourself in their undies which they’ll gladly post online.

The great thing about these undies is that they make you feel athletic, even if you aren’t. They seem to be infused with some secret sportiness, an unknown ingredient. Are they just plain racy? A little. But they’re also downright fun.

With the National Briefs think wonderful digitised branding along the band plus the chance to show international patriotism by sporting underwear from the likes of USA, Australia or the UK. The motif carries across to their Nation Swims, a range of classic swimming trunks which includes USA (white), Italy (green) , Great Britain (navy), Spain (yellow), Germany (black) , France (blue) and of course Australia (red). For the traditionalists among you, the Classic Trunk is just that, even down to the highlighted y-front tailoring while the more risqué will love the Super Low Briefs.

2(x)IST

Undies don’t come in any more incarnations then they do at 2(x)ist. Truly. These guys have over nine collections which provide boys with over 40 pieces of underwear, including tanks, singlets and long johns (their Liquid Cotton Long Johns double as fantastic leggings). This iconic American brand offers Contour Pouch Briefs, No-Show Briefs, Trunks and Tank Tops in a variety of ranges, which include classic cotton, contrast coloured classics, track staples plus a collection infused with carbon so it creates underwear that is anti-bacterial. Since their inception in 1991, 2(x)ist have created a stable of supportive undergarments that are a must for the discerning.

So what does this all mean? Well, put simply, 2(x)ist make great undies. Scrap that – 2(x)ist make really great undies. The best part about this undies is that they have fantastic construction underlying each design. And the contoured front actually makes you look bigger. A lot bigger. It may be a great little optical illusion (although neither my partner nor I need much emphasis) but it’s one that will go down a treat in the bedroom. Well, go down moments before your undies do that is.

OBVIOUSLY

Personally I love these undies. They rock, and for two reasons. The first is their incredibly unusual design is incredibly comfortable. Essentially they have a pocket at the front, a veritable extension of the undies like a comfortable pouch. It’s for this reason that my boyfriend doesn’t like them – he thinks the design is a little too out there. But I like them, even if the design is odd.

Why do I love them so? Is it because they’re organically made? Is it because they reduce chafing? Is it because they make you look big when you have pants on? Is it because when you wear them to bed and wake up in the morning you feel… hmmm, the only way to describe that last one is to wear them yourself. But honestly? It’s for all these reasons, plus the fact they are Aussie made. They also come in 100% recycled packaging and a range of designs, from briefs to boxers to trunks and jockstraps.

Obviously probably wouldn’t be your first choice in underwear, but you seriously should consider them. They rack up plenty of points: great wear, durable, spacious, comfy, enhancing. With all those pluses, obviously Obviously are well worth checking out.

AUSSIE BUM

Aussie Bum? Yum! There is something inherently sexy about this brand. The fact that they’ve unleashed a swathe of new undies just adds to how yum Aussie Bum are. That and their campaigns are brilliant.

So, throw in new pieces like the super snug Lightning Briefs which come in the campest plaids, Glow in the Dark undies which a prefect when you’re playing in the dark and their Scruffs, a classic cotton mid length boxer which you’ll cream when you see on your boyfriend. Then there’s the Wonderjock, so called because it makes you bigger then Ben Hur. And I heard Ben Hur was big. Really big. Especially on the silver screen.

Which ever way you look at them – in the packet, on yourself, on the bedroom floor – Aussie Bum make a range of undies that are highly covetable and diverse in the range of tastes they cater too. Yes, Aussie Bum have something for every bum, even those that don’t call Australia home.
