2008 has seen GLCS spread its wings into training and consultancy, as well as continuing to provide numerous core services to the community. Here are some highlights:
Our team of volunteer telephone counsellors has provided countless hours of support to the DSG and wider community.
A successful Women on Women course was run through May and June.
The 26up mens group has held regular functions.
GLCS are working with the police in order to improve policing practice and to increase awareness of issues facing the DSG community. GLCS facilitators provided a number of training sessions, training approximately 180 WA Police cadets.
The annual Biggest Loser Competition at fun Fairday once again proved to be a real success! This year’s Biggest Loser and the lucky winner of a Court Hotel dinner voucher will be announced soon.
Opening Closets facilitators visited the south-west region of WA, delivering training to combat youth suicide in regional areas. This initiative was funded by ICCWA (Injury Control Council Western Australia) and delivered in partnership with True Colours.
GLCS – Plans for 2009
In 2009, GLCS plans to focus on consolidating our core services; counselling, support, information, referrals, and resources for the DSG and wider community. In particular, GLCS will provide a Women on Women course and a Counsellor Training course, both in early 2009.
The other key development is an Opening Closets promotional campaign. The aim of this campaign is to increase the capacity of the WA community to understand issues faced by DSG people, improve their services, and understand their legal responsibilities. The campaign starts right here, in Out in Perth. Look out for our myth-busting ads!
Volunteer Event
Firstly, the GLCS Board would like to extend enormous thanks to our dedicated and extremely capable team of volunteers. Without these volunteers GLCS couldn’t operate! Our volunteers undertake a myriad of tasks, ranging from administrative assistance, telephone counselling, social and support group facilitation, to training, and governance (on the board).
We are always looking for new, enthusiastic volunteers. If you have ever thought about giving something back to your community, GLCS might be the place for you!
We would like to invite all people interested in joining the GLCS team, and all current volunteers to attend a GLCS orientation and volunteer celebration at 11am on Sunday 23rd November at City West Lotteries House, 2 Delhi St, West Perth. We look forward to seeing you there! If you have previously expressed an interest in volunteering we will be in touch shortly with more information about this orientation day.
Special General Meeting
Those of you who attended the GLCS AGM in August will remember the discussion regarding the proposed change to the GLCS Constitution to change the restrictions on the length of board terms. In order to make this change official, we will be having a Special General Meeting for all GLCS members. All members will receive the appropriate information by mail in advance. This event will be held after the volunteer orientation.
