Pixar-perfect animation brings the Scottish Highlands to life and takes us back to medieval times. King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) invite the elders of the Highland clans to present their sons to compete for their daughter’s hand in marriage. Apart from the fact that these sons fulfil every stereotype conjured up by the word ‘moron’, their daughter Merida (Kelly Macdonald) is not waiting around for her prince and certainly doesn’t want one forced upon her. She wants to choose her own destiny. An expert archer with unruly red hair, Merida is determined and feisty and has more in common with Katniss from The Hunger Games than the stable of Disney girls that have proceeded her. Three years in the making, this animated feature has a more serious tone than the previous Pixar productions but there are plenty of shenanigans by the brawling Scots and Merida’s three younger brothers.
