SET YOUR SITES – THE SUPER GAYS OF YOUTUBE

It should come as no surprise that the term ‘vlog’ sounds so similar to flog, as in flogging a dead horse or flogging your wares. In fact, the term is virtually interchangeable. Yes, one can vlog a dead horse and even vlog ones one wares. So… what on earth is vlogging.

Vlogging is blogging but with a video camera, so the end result is a short media clip. In its lengthened form a vlog is a video blog or video web log. With the advent of YouTube, vlogging has become increasingly popular with people taking YouTube motto, ‘broadcast yourself’, literally to heart and spawning a new wave of web noise which focuses all on the individual.

Now, put this popular tool in the hands of a select group of homosexuals and the result is a phenomenon known simply as The Super Gays of YouTube. Yes, like Michael Buckley from What The Buck?! says ‘Gay people have taken over YouTube’. And how!

1) What The Buck?!
Michael Buckley is the penultimate fast paced, bespectacled celebrity gossiper. In his show What The Buck?! he tackles everything from Britney’s beaver to Tyra’s latest weave. It’s unnerving that somebody should list whitening their teeth as a favourite pastime, but Buckley does. He’s incredibly sharp, totally outrageous and doesn’t hold back, covering everything that’s irrelevant about popular culture and adding his own cute spin. With over 252,000 subscribers, 4,871,242 channel views Michael Buckley is the supreme Super Gay of YouTube.

2) Sharolaid Videos
Sharolaid is hilarious… in a completely politically incorrect way. Sharolaid is a white boy in a frock pretending to be a ghetto black girl. The result is in your face, over the top and completely out of control. Since 2006, Sharolaid has been suspended 100 times. Why? Because YouTube thought she was being offensive… until a string of copycats cropped up. Now, Sharolaid may only have 6,170 subscribers but she has over 2,000 videos, highlights being her Taco Bell Prank Calls and Doo Doo Girls. You laugh because you know you shouldn’t.

3) It’s Chris Crocker
Chris Crocker is scary. Really scary. Leave Britney alone? If you say so Chris. The boy who shot to international shame with his now legendary vlog Leave Britney Alone is a huge YouTube ‘star’. He’s also really unstable by the looks of it. Borderline almost. He was meant to be leaving YouTube but seems to be back using it to push his new single, Mind In The Gutter. And possibly so he can fill his script for meds… even not pay his crack dealer. Anyway… he wears mascara, is looser than an open jar of jam, hides under his sheets and has (only) 180,000 subscribers. Psychotic, crude and the self-declared face of YouTube… Chris Crocker is horror right there on your TV.

4) 5 Awesome Gays
These guys clock so high because they not only vlog with heartfelt sincerity but aren’t as self-centred as the remaining Super Gays. Relative newcomers they only have 12,200 subscribers. But if Chris Crocker is the degenerate Anti-Christ of YouTube then these guys are the 5 Apostles. Yes, Gen Y can be nice: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are testament to that. And yes… they’ve named themselves after days of the week. A little too schmaltzy at times… but at least they aren’t vacuous crack-heads or narcissistic wannabes.

5) William Sledd
Speaking of narcissistic… William Sledd is the self-proclaimed fashion guru of the Super Gays. He has 103,800 subscribers and has had an almighty 4,099,555 channel views: not bad for a fat kid from Kentucky with a bad lisp. Sledd rose to attention with his Walmart videos – a sequence of videos where he videotaped badly dressed people in Walmart and ripped the sh*t out of them for their wardrobe choices. NBC has picked him up (someone had to) and now he’s at the start of a beautiful career… one which will see his fashion criticism ricochet right through American culture.

6) Gay God
Ugh – Matthew Lush is apparently G ay God. Hmmm, Gay Sod maybe but definitely not Gay God. He’s arrogant and self-obsessed but does post some great videos… like one which dealt with all the death threats he’d been getting. With 83,044, Matthew Lush comes in last on the list because arrogance is not a commodity one should be broadcasting. Although has he lost weight? Hmmm, maybe he’s on the Chris Crocker Crack diet…?
