Lovers Electric

From Casio keyboards to fluoro fashions, husband and wife duo Eden Boucher and David Turley (aka Lovers Electric) are bringing back the best of the 80s. With their history in theatre (they toured with a street theatre company prior to writing their first album) and fashion (Eden ran her own fashion label in London), the pair flawlessly blend enough pop theatricality and animated electro style to resurrect Robert Palmer. Yes, the 80s are alive and well with the Lovers Electric debut ‘Whatever You Want’ set to deliver a pocketful of neon fun to Australia’s dance floors.

Lovers Electric began as a matter of convenience. Since she was already going to all the gigs, Eden jokes that she started performing with David in order to save him the trouble of adding her name to the doorlist every night. Besides creating a duo more dynamic than Batman and Robin (though equally well-costumed), that move has saved both of them the heartache of parting ways whenever touring time comes.

‘A lot of musicians are pretty lonely. They’re on tour a lot and they have to leave their other half at home and they kind of have parallel lives going on – life on tour and life at home, but for David and I it’s all the same life and I think it’s a lot less hassle.’

All in all, it’s working pretty well, says Eden, and she and David have forged not only a solid personal relationship but the type of professional musical partnership most bands dream of (just ask Wolfmother, the latest mega-act whose talent was laid waste by a mega clash of egos). In fact, the two work so well together that listening to Eden talk about their writing process (which is really more a lack of one), it seems Lovers Electric are one of those magical outfits that can conjure new songs on a whim.

‘We’re not really routine people – we are fairly random, so how we write is pretty random as well. Sometimes David might come to me with a song and I might edit it. Other times it might be vice versa. Or I might be doing a bit of sewing in the other room and David might be singing and I’ll say “hey, that sounds pretty good” and I’ll come in and take over,’ Eden laughs, then quickly adds, ‘No, I don’t take over…’

The band’s writing has been so prolific that Eden admits they recently wrote most of their second album during a residency in New York. That’s quite the accomplishment for an act who are only know prepping to tour their first album.

‘In New York, we had a residency there and we were staying in my cousin’s flat just before he moved into it. They were going to renovate the place, so there was no furniture in it and we just had a blow up bed and a couple of camping chairs… We pretty much wrote our second album while we were in New York in that month,’ says Eden, adding, ‘Usually when the weather is horrible we write more songs.’

While the weather may provide an impetus to work on new tracks, the inspiration for songs typically comes from their own lives, or at least, the lives of those around them.

‘Sometimes songwriters write in a more storytelling type way and they make up a scenario. We don’t really write like that. It’s always about something we are going through. There’s always a plethora of breakups going on within our friends, so we always have some good heartbreak story to write about.’

With the songs written and recorded, ‘Whatever You Want’ on the shelves, and tour dates soon to follow, Lovers Electric are going to make it pop, electro-style all over Australia later this year.
