Brian McFadden

With the release of his latest album ‘Set In Stone’, former Westlife member, Brian McFadden may be flying solo, but in his personal life he’s finally popped the question and coupled up with Australian pop goddess Delta Goodrem. OUTinPerth’s Megan Smith caught up with the sexy Irishman over a pint at the Brisbane to get the goss on how he proposed, whether he’ll sing at the wedding, and what he thinks of same-sex marriages.

So, do tell, how did you propose to Delta?

We went to Bali on holidays together and I hired out a restaurant looking out over the Indian Ocean. I wrote a book for the couple of months before, and basically each page of the book started with ‘Do you remember the day/the night/the afternoon when… we went here or we did this.’ It’s all these happy memories, and then the last page is ‘Do you remember the night in Bali when I asked you to marry me and you said…’ Then I got down with the ring.

Two singers getting married, do you think either of you will perform at the wedding?

I have a suggestion that instead of doing speaking vows we write our vows as a song to each other. I think that would be fitting to what we are.

What about singing at the reception?

I know what is going to happen – we’ll both say that we aren’t working that night, so no singing because we would have to think about it too much. Then, we’ll end up getting drunk and singing anyways.

Another marriage making headlines is gay marriage. What’s your opinion of gay marriages? Should they be allowed?

I think it is the same as any other marriage to me. Of course, Mark from Westlife was gay and he had to fight it for so long. I’ve been surrounded by that sort of small-mindedness for a long time, especially growing up in Ireland… I don’t think someone’s sexuality has to do with anything else in life. Every person has their individual sexual tastes, whether it is with a male or a female, that doesn’t make a difference. There are some Irish people who do some dodgy shit that would be frowned on a lot more by a priest.

You have a tattoo of lyrics ‘sometimes life breaks in mysterious ways’ from your song Sorry Love Daddy. What made you choose those lyrics?

I knew the second I wrote it that I was going to get a tattoo of it. It’s a song my kids can listen to when they grow up and understand better why their life is the way it is now. I’ve learned in life, that sometimes shit is going to happen and you’re going to get screwed up. I went through hell for two years, but I came out better on the other side. So, I realized life does break in mysterious ways.
