Mardi Gras Launch for Katie Noonan

Katie Noonan spoke to Zoe Carter

Sydney New Mardi Gras have lined up an awesome array of talent for the 2007 Mardi Gras Party. One of the stellar acts will be Australia’s own Queen of Drop Dead Gorgeous Vocals, and Mistress of Diverse Musical Genres, Katie Noonan. We caught up with Katie to chat about the upcoming Mardi Gras gig and her new single ‘Time to Begin’.

Katie Noonan confessed that she ‘Loves any opportunity to frock up and it’s such an over the top spectacle it’s going to be fun.’ Whilst she usually prefers to work with a live band, she’s enjoying the process of working with the party crew, describing them as ‘Such great team – it’s a big, beautiful thing.’ She added that ‘Mardi Gras is the perfect place for the launch as love and acceptance are what I’m all about and the new track is essentially dance music.’ Although some mixes of her new single have been sneaking their way onto the airwaves around the country, there is a new remix made especially for the party.

Somewhat of chameleon when it comes to musical genres, Katie says her new album ‘Skin’ represents yet another new direction. The new album, which is due for release later this year, explores the sounds of late 60’s and 70’s groove element, with Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, and drums and bass rhythm sections contributing their influence. Describing the mood of the album she said ‘it’s very up tempo joyous music you can dance to but with a strong lyric’.

Katie has been very excited about doing her own thing again after several collaborative projects. Performing her own original material is her first love, but then she has loved all the different projects she’s working on. Perhaps the enthusiasm she brings to her many projects is responsible for her seemingly effortless transcendence of musical genres. Two of a Kind, in which she recorded with mother Maggie Noonan was a project that was particularly close to her heart. All of the many eclectic things she has done in the past have been special for different reason, but says this album is particularly special as she feels it has a little piece of everything in one record.

Enjoying a period of new creativity, she’s created an album based on the idea of an old style vinyl with two sides. This means two distinct halves – one is up groove tempo and second is what she describes as ‘more typically my style’. A special release of the album on vinyl is planned.

Time to Begin should be available from late March, with the album Skin due out mid year. For everyone not lucky enough to be going to Mardi Gras this year, Katie Noonan says while tour dates are yet to be finalised, we can expect to see her in WA around August.
