Infamous, Directed by Douglas McGrath

InfamousImmediate comparisons will be made with last year’s Oscar-wining film Capote because Infamous tracks the same journey taken by Truman Capote as he writes his masterpiece “In Cold Blood”. Even though the two films cover the same material, they are both masterpieces. As Capote, Toby Jones takes us on a more spiritual journey than just the six year quest for material for a book. This film delves more into the complex psychology of the author that is only hinted at in the previous one.

Accompanied by his longtime friend Nelle Harper Lee (Sandra Bullock), the flamboyantly effeminate Capote leaves the elegant circles of Manhattan’s most sophisticated to take up residence in the small rural town in Kansas where a family of four had been brutally slain. Bullock brings humour and intelligence to the grounded Pulitzer Prize winning author as Harper Lee balances out the more outrageous antics of Capote.

Daniel Craig is very charismatic as the dangerous but sensitive Perry. In this film Capote spends much more time in the prison cell with the killer. Truman had actually said the Perry and he had walked the same road until they had taken different forks, and this compelling drama develops into one of forbidden love. Infamous is the first Perth Festival film to screen at Somerville from 4-10 December and then screens at Joondalup Pines 11-17 December. Films commence at 8.30pm this year.
