ASIA PACIFIC OUTGAMES

Registrations are now open for the 1st Asia Pacific Outgames Melbourne 2008. Participants will pay an Outgames Participant Fee of $60, followed by an individual Activity Fee (starting from $25), for either Conference or a Sport. The Activity Fee each participant pays will vary as it is dependant on the cost of staging their chosen activity and/or activities. Participants who register before Wednesday 10 October will be in the draw to win a $500 STA Travel Voucher, plus 12 Month Subscriptions to DNA and LOTL Magazines. A late fee may be introduced on Monday 26 November 2007.

BASKETBALL

In women’s SBL, the Perry Lakes Hawks, who finished the regular season tied for second with a record of 18-4, convincingly beat the top-ranked Stirling Senators, whose regular season performance saw them finish atop the ladder with a record of 20-2, by a score of 66-40.

SWIMMING

With the weather warming and the barbies heating, there is no better time to jump in the pool to cool off. The G&L swim club meets at Wesley Sports Club at Wesley College in South Perth (off Angelo St) at 9am Sunday mornings for a 30-40 minute swim followed by coffee. Entry to the pool is $3.30. FOOTY

This season was a landmark season for WA Women’s Football League. For the first time in history, the league divided into two divisions and a total of 10 teams. In the Reserves League, new club Joondalup defeated South Fremantle in the grand final 38-29. In League action, the Melville Dockers completed an undefeated season toppling 2006 champions the Coastal Titans 45-28. Congratulations to both squads and to Reserves Best and Fairest Sabrina Moro and League Best and Fairest winners Shelley Matcham, Chelsea Randall and Louise Knitter.

BADMINTON

G&L Badminton is still growing, with new people coming every week and adding more fun to an already exciting night! This increase has necessitated meeting with the Alma Venville Recreation Centre staff, who have kindly catered to our growing needs by adding four extra courts across the other basketball court. They have also invested in new nets and poles, so by the time of your reading this, we should be playing across seven courts, which means everybody will have even more games. We are also looking at a name for our club, so when you see our tent at Fairday, please stop in and write down your suggestion; a great prize will be given to the winner!

GAELIC

In women’s Gaelic, Greenwood Football Club continued their domination of the league, winning their 7th straight title. Greenwood beat the Coastal Breakers 26-12 in the semifinals and faced St. Finbarrs in the final. Despite a valiant effort from the St. Finbarrs side, powerhouse Greenwood were invincible, taking out the final 26-7.

TENNIS

It’s time to throw off the winter sloth and hit the courts as the 2007/08 tennis season starts at Loton Park Tennis Club on Saturday 6 October 2007 at 1.00pm. Loton Park has been an essentially gay and lesbian tennis club since 1995. As far as we know, we are the only gay and lesbian tennis club in the world which operates its own facilities. We lease our 6 grass and 2 hard courts (with lights) and Clubhouse from the Town of Vincent. We are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Club and employ a professional groundsman to ensure the grass courts are kept in great condition. The Club is the second oldest continually operating tennis club in Western Australia, having been officially opened on 16 December 1916. The Clubhouse and grounds are included on the Western Australian Heritage Register. The Hard Courts are about to have a facelift with the resurfacing scheduled for October.

Open Day is free, and is a great chance for first timers or those who have been away for awhile to come down and enjoy a great day with all our current members.

For the first time Loton Park will be having a Women’s and Men’s Only Day as well. The Men’s Only Day will be Sunday 14 October at 2.00pm and the Women’s Only Day Sunday 21 October 2007 at 1.00pm. The bar will be open, and who knows, there might even be some tennis – so come on down and meet some new people.

The Club has a Management Committee of 12 who have been working hard preparing the forthcoming season which includes regular Organised Social Tennis every Saturday from 2pm-6pm and Twilight Tennis Wednesdays, (commencing from 31 Oct) from 5pm onwards with pizza on the dinner menu. There are fun ‘Theme Days’ planned throughout the year along with Sausage Sizzle Saturdays, competitions, tournaments and social events, like our popular Quiz Night and Annual Dinner.The courts are available for members to use on all other days free with a $10/hour fee if the lights are used. Non members can hire the hard courts for $10/hour during the day and $15/hour at night. The Club House is also available for hire at very reasonable rates.

Over the years Loton Park has excelled in the Tennis West League competitions, we are hoping to continue the great form of the Women who were finalists in the Division 2 O/35 Sunday Women’s comp last season and the Men who won the Midweek Winter Men’s Double Division 1, with the Club having the largest number of teams competing in the upcoming season for several years. There will be teams in the O/35’s Women’s and Men’s Sunday afternoon Competition, Mixed Doubles on Tuesday night, Men’s Open on Sundays and Women’s Thursday night.

Membership Fees for the 2007/08 Season are now due:Full Membership $205, Concessional Member $160, Social Member $30. Visitor Fees are: $12 for afternoon tennis on Saturdays,$5 for Twilight Tennis Wednesdays. As a special bonus for visitors, visitors who play the full $12 Saturday fee can play on the following Wednesday Twilight Tennis for free. If you’d like to brush up on your tennis coaching is available for individual or group sessions. Lessons are $40 per hour with up to 4 people in a group.
