A poll of Australia’s LGBTIQ+ community has revealed that over four-fifths of those surveyed are opposed to the proposed plebiscite on marriage equality.

5,463 LGBTIQ+ people were polled in July in the largest survey of its kind here in Australia. The results revealed that 85% of respondents were opposed to a plebiscite, and 72% said they were strongly opposed.

89% showed they would prefer a free vote over a public vote, knowing that the plebiscite does not bind MPs to vote with the decision.

63% of those questioned would still prefer a free vote even if the plebiscite was seen to have a “good chance of success” and have the question “fairly framed”. Only 10% of participants said that they support a plebiscite.

Social scientist Sharon Dane designed the study, which was funded by Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and recently formed marriage equality advocacy group just.equal.
