In the wake of 2013’s successful one man show “Confession of a Grindr Addict” comes another one man show spawned from the life experiences of Gavin Roach.

‘I Can’t say the F Word’ is a witty, energetic and educational sojourn into the life and times little Gavin. Its a story in which every single person who identifies as ‘different’ will find funny and at times painfully familiar, however ‘different’ you are.

The show comes with a bit of a trigger warning. However in saying this it was counter balanced with plenty of hysterical comical relief to ease off on the emotional heaviness I am sure patrons will be confronted with.

On a personal note there were a few emotional gut punch moments felt which is testament to Roach’s skill but as a grown up I can handle it. It feels good to look back and reminisce over the moments that tested my own mettle back in the day, but enough about me.

Roach’s performance was engaging and almost hypnotic. It was thought provoking and you are left pondering the nature and true power of words. Some words we hate and others we love and its all in the context.

I only have two small critiques and one of them is location. The show itself deserved a more intimate space where external noises cannot be heard. Secondly, the lack of crowd on opening night. Everyone, and I do mean everyone should see this show.

However you identify yourself to be you need to go see it immediately. Buy your ticket now because I think this show is destined to open hearts and minds to the power of words and the struggles of the ‘different’. As for the F Word itself, you’re just going to have to go see it to find out what it is and its not what you’d immediately think.

‘I Can’t Say the F Word’ is at The Stables in the Perth Cultural Centre as part of Fringe World until February 8th. Get tickets at www.fringeworld.com.au
